Southwestern University wanted to create a fifteen (15) minute film highlighting the challenges and triumphs of Southwestern’s African-American Alumni over the last 40 years. The main concept of the film was to be a collection of personal stories and tributes to the people who helped one another learn, grow, understand, cope and succeed. The goal of the film was to have the audience discover that the experience of African-American students at Southwestern is not separate and apart from the Southwestern Experience.
On Nov. 6, 2009, Southwestern University held a Gala event to celebrate "40 Years of African-American Alumni Achievement" in the Alma Thomas Theater. Alumni from all decades gathered together with members of Southwestern's giving societies to pay tribute to this part of Southwestern's history and to honor Ernest Clark '69, Southwestern's first African-American graduate.
The Gala event intertwined the film documentary with the live moving personal reflections from Alumni as they recalled their days at Southwestern.
